Ijaiya Happy Over Quality of New Optometry Equipment

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya, has expressed satisfaction over the quality of the equipment recently procured for the teaching and training of students in the institution’s Department of Optometry and Vision Science, Faculty of Life Sciences.

Prof. Ijaiya, who made this observation last Friday (March 9, 2018) when she visited the Department, described the equipment as very critical and central to meaningful teaching and training of the students.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who was conducted round during the equipment inspection tour by the Head of the Department , Prof. Mathew Oriowo, expressed confidence that the equipment are going to be very helpful for training of the students and also for clinical services for the benefit of members of the University  community and the general public at large.

Prof. Ijaiya added that the state-of-the-art equipment will further put the University of Ilorin in a limelight as only very few Universities in Nigeria have Optometry Department, pointing out that the closest University to Ilorin that also has the Department is University of Benin.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor advised the foundation staff of the Department to attach seriousness to their job and be focused, sincere, tolerant, and painstaking and cooperate with one another so as to lay a good foundation for the Department.

She commended the Head of the Department for single-handedly working towards the realisation of the unit right from the formative stage up to the completion, with a promise that the University would continue to support and assist the Department any time the need arises

Prof. Ijaiya also advised the students of the Department to be very serious, focused, patient and respectful because they are going to be dealing with human eyes, which are very fragile and not replaceable.

Welcoming the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Head of the Department, Prof. Oriowo, said that the equipment are standard and will really help for the successful take-off of the clinical training of students and treatment of patients with eyes problems.

Prof. Oriowo pointed out that the Department is starting on a solid footing considering the quality of the equipment available for teaching, training and for community service.

He expressed confidence that the centre would be one of the best clinical centres in Nigeria and Africa in general in the nearest future.
